The following data offers a snapshot into the weekly trends of the top industries being targeted by Phishing: The fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. attacks from November 12 – November 18, 2017.
This week, we saw a larger decrease in overall phishing activity – -11% – for the top 20 brands we monitor. With the largest increase in activity being from Social Networks and the largest decrease being from Computer Software. Only two industries saw an increase in phishing this week.
The top two industries that saw the largest increases in phishing activity were:
- Social Networks (>100%)
- Banking (>4%)
Four industries saw decreases in phishing activity:
- Computer Software (>45%)
- Internet and Information Services (>45%)
- Telecommunications (>40%)
- Storage & Systems Management Software (>31%)
By pulling information from major Internet Service Providers (ISP), partners, clients, feeds, and our own proprietary honey pots and web crawlers, we are able to get a 360-degree view of the phishing landscape. The percentages posted are based on the sum of the phishing threats of the top 20 brands, and do not include anything below the top 20 threshold.
