The following data offers a snapshot into the weekly trends of the top industries being targeted by Phishing: The fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. attacks from December 31, 2017 – January 6, 2018.
This week, we saw a large increase in overall phishing activity – 40% – for the top 20 brands we monitor. With the largest increase in activity being from Telecommunications and the largest decrease being from eCommerce. Only four industries saw an increase in phishing this week.
The top 5 industries that saw increases in phishing activity:
- Banking (>160%)
- Internet Information Services (>70%)
- Computer Software (>25%)
- Social Networking (>15%)
- Computer Hardware (>5%)
Only four industries saw decreases in phishing activity this week:
- Electronic Payment Systems (>35%)
- Internet Search & Navigation Services (>30%)
- Telecommunications (>20%)
- Storage and Systems Management Software(>15%)
By pulling information from major Internet Service Providers (ISP), partners, clients, feeds, and our own proprietary honey pots and web crawlers, we are able to get a 360-degree view of the phishing landscape. The percentages posted are based on the sum of the phishing threats of the top 20 brands, and do not include anything below the top 20 threshold.
