The recent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against Dyn that took down major websites across the East Coast has raised questions with security industry experts about the increasing cyber security threats enterprises face. What makes the Dyn cyber attack so interesting and acts as a cause for concern is not that Dyn was attacked, but how the Domain Name System (DNS) company was attacked: via a million connected devices, including refrigerators, toasters, and baby monitors.

The growing number of IoT (Internet of Things) devices has fundamentally shifted the threat landscape. Now just about anything can be connected to the Internet, meaning any of these devices can be used in a cyber attack. Adding fuel to the fire, many IoT devices are low-cost and poorly secured, which compounds this security challenge.

The lack of visibility into these issues has caused many problems for enterprises. Specifically, how are they expected to fend off threat actors that they don’t even know about? What companies need are products and services that holistically operationalize threat intelligence and deliver real time protection and multiple layers of security from known bad locations. They need access to products and services that can identify an array of cyber threats and provide greater visibility of risks relevant to their company and industry.

Threat intelligence should proactively identify potential new campaigns and use that situational awareness for actionable, relevant intelligence.
